In honour of Youth Day 2017, Deezer, the world’s most diverse, dynamic and personal music streaming service, is asking SA music fans to share their favourite Youth Day Songs. Songs that inspire, motivate, or simply celebrate the spirit of youth in South Africa.
To kick-start the conversation, Deezer asked its four Deezer Next artists to share their favourite Youth Day songs and to explain why in a series of short videos that can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nHfIKHdCVE&feature=youtu.be
For people who don’t know Deezer – how would you explain it?
“Deezer is an amazing way to find all the music that you love. 43 million tracks, in one app, in your pocket – anywhere, anytime at all. We focus strongly on South African music, and African music and have unique playlists to help with music discovery. So find your old favourites, or new music to love.”
Why is DEEZER a better streaming service than other services online?
“Streaming services are such a great way to listen to music, easy, affordable and convenient. Deezer has some wonderful features that distinguish it. We have the amazing FLOW feature, a very sophisticated algorithm which predicts the music you will love and creates personal playlists for you. We have a team in the country, with an editor who ensures that all the South African music is there. We also have podcasts and radio built in. There are so many more features, it’s really worth checking it out for yourself.”
How are artists able to utilise this service: how do artists sign up, is there anything specific that you look for in an artist?
“We like to work with all music, all labels and all artists. Everything should be available. Artists need to sign up with a digital aggregator who will get their music to Deezer – its really easy. In terms of artists that we promote and partner with, its really about artists who stand out for us for a variety of reasons.”
Why launch DEEZER NEXT?
“To help emerging artists break through. 43 million tracks is quite intimidating and we want to help our audience find great music, and help our artists to find that audience.”
Why the focus on emerging artists and now in South Africa?
“This is actually a global campaign for Deezer. Our global Next artists are being promoted in all of our 180 territories – these are Rag’n’ Bone Man, Maggie Rogers and Anne-Marie. Each territory was then empowered to chose their own local artists to work with, and we chose four for South Africa.”
Explain your Youth Day Campaign?
“Youth and music have always, and will always be linked. So as the Next artists are all part of the youth, we thought it was a great opportunity to showcase their talent, and give them an opportunity to share their thoughts and favourites for Youth Day. We have spoken to other artists as well, and their videos will be shared on our social media over the Youth Day period.”
The plan going forward?
“To support and help the artists as much as possible!”
