Dead Yellow Sands

Award Winning play closes the artistic calendar at the Market Theatre

Winner of the Fleur du Cap Awards for Best Performance in a One Person Show by bravura solo-performer Graham Weir and Best Lighting Design by Guy de Lancey, Dead Yellow Sands is directed by Bo Petersen will premiere at the Market Theatre from 16 November – 10 December 2017.

Dead Yellow Sands began its successful run at the Alexander Bar Theatre, Cape Town in 2015, and played to sold out houses. After a successful season at the 969 Festival in Johannesburg, the production returned to the Alexander Bar Theatre for, yet another sold out season. Dead Yellow Sands performed to further acclaim at the Hilton Festival in Kwa- Zulu Natal following its sold-out season at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in July 2016, and most recently received still further exceptional ratings and reviews at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town.

Dead Yellow Sands might well be described as a collection of portraitures that live for a brief few minutes and return to the darkness of black space. Based on people Weir has met or observed over the years, the characters are all at a winding-down moment in their lives.

Beverley Brommert of the Argus described Dead Yellow Sands as, “compelling and oddly impersonal despite its universality, enlivened with first-class singing where appropriate…a tour-de-force not to be missed.” Raised in Benoni, Weir explains that the town’s name means ‘Son of my Sorrow,’ and poignantly, “steers us through an awareness of Thanatos from one age of man to the next in a deftly crafted piece of theatre.”

Finally, as noted by Tracey Saunders in The Cape Times, Weir appears to, “wash away with the greyish pallor” of the light, and where a minute or two before he had with the “skill of a master painter taken a few brushstrokes to paint the Jo’burg skyline,” now there is just a blank space.

Never moving from his chair, Weir is lit sparsely by a lighting rig constructed with scrap materials and household light bulbs; each character is exposed through a series of monologues which, while they are individual vignettes, are simultaneously facets of Weir himself.

As a token of appreciation for supporting the Market Theatre during 2017, patrons booking for Dead Yellow Sands tickets will be sold at R90.00 for the entire season.
